Scorching Sunshine: What the Heatwave Means for You and Your Business

Is it just us, or has the UK skipped spring and jumped straight into summer? With temperatures soaring well into the high twenties this week, it’s officially a heatwave—and while most of us are enjoying the sunshine (when we’re not stuck in the office!), the sudden change in weather has some unexpected effects for both our personal and business lives.

Here at PSF Accounting we’ve swapped hot coffees for iced lattes, and we’re hearing from clients who are juggling everything from overheated workspaces to distracted teams dreaming of the beach. So how can you make the most of the heat—and stay cool while you’re doing it?

1. Keep an Eye on Productivity
When it’s hot, productivity often takes a dip. If you’re managing a team, consider flexible hours or work-from-home days while the temperatures stay high. A bit of flexibility now can boost morale and focus—and it shows your staff that you care.

2. Think About Cash Flow
Some businesses thrive in a heatwave (hello, ice cream vans and garden centres!), while others slow down. If your takings tend to dip in warm weather, now’s a good time to review your cash flow forecast and ensure you’re prepared for any seasonal swings.

3. Don’t Forget the Tax Breaks
Installing air conditioning? Investing in shaded outdoor space for staff breaks? Some of these improvements could qualify for capital allowances—so don’t forget to keep those receipts and speak to us if you’re unsure what qualifies.

4. Make the Most of It
A hot spell in the UK isn’t something we get every day. If you’re a business owner, consider if there’s a summer promotion or offer that could boost footfall or online sales. Even something as simple as a cold drink for visitors can make a difference.

5. Stay Safe and Sensible
Finally, a gentle reminder—stay hydrated, dress for the weather, and keep your workspace as cool as possible. Heatwaves can take their toll on our health, so look after yourself and your team.

If you’ve got any questions about how the current climate (literally or financially!) might affect your business, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re always happy to help—whatever the weather.

Stay cool,
The PSF Accounting Team
