AI: Coming for Your Job, or Just Your Boring Jobs?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of years, you’ll have noticed that everyone is talking about AI.

Apparently, it’s going to change everything.

It can write emails, create pictures, analyse information, answer questions and probably make a decent cup of coffee before long.

Naturally, the first question everyone asks is:

“Is AI going to take my job?”

Well, maybe. But there’s a good chance it’s more interested in taking the bits of your job that you hate.

The repetitive admin. The endless data entry. The same email you’ve written 47 times. Searching through old files for that one document you know is somewhere.

You know the sort of thing.

And that’s where AI could actually be brilliant.

We’ve spent decades inventing technology to make our lives easier. The calculator didn’t put accountants out of work. Email didn’t destroy communication. And Excel certainly hasn’t stopped people from making spreadsheets unnecessarily complicated.

AI is just the latest tool.

The businesses that get the most from it probably won’t be the ones shouting about having “AI-powered everything”.

They’ll be the ones quietly using it to save three hours here, half a day there, and generally get more done without working until midnight.

Of course, there’s one small problem.

AI can be spectacularly confident and spectacularly wrong at exactly the same time.

Ask it something and it’ll happily give you an answer with the confidence of someone who has absolutely no intention of checking whether they’re right.

So no, we’re probably not quite ready to hand over the keys to the business just yet.

The future is much more likely to be people using AI, rather than AI replacing people completely.

Let the machines handle the boring stuff.

We’ll handle the important stuff.

And if AI can also stop anyone sending an email marked “URGENT” at 4:57pm on a Friday, then frankly, we’re all winners.
